About the Proaza–Buyera section

The southern section of the Bear Trail runs 6 km from Proaza village to the Buyera recreation area. This is the most popular section among families, passing right beside the bear enclosure where Molina lives. The trail ends at Buyera with public swimming pools open in summer.

What to see on this section

  • Bear enclosure: Molina's 4-hectare enclosure runs alongside the trail. Best viewing spots are clearly marked. Binoculars recommended.
  • Proaza village: The starting point has a small café, bar and shaded picnic tables.
  • Buyera recreation area: The end point features a river beach, public pools (open July–August), a kiosk bar and ample parking.
  • Illuminated tunnels: Even this short section has several tunnels — always a highlight for children.

How many kilometers long is the Bear Trail?

The Bear Trail is approximately 50 km in its full route, divided into several sections that you can do independently.

Is it suitable for families with children?

Yes, it is one of the most suitable routes for families in Asturias. The terrain is flat and well-signposted. We recommend the Tuñón–Proaza section for the little ones.

Can it be done with a dog?

Yes, dogs are welcome as long as they are on a leash. There are water fountains at several points along the route.

How long does it take to complete the full trail?

For the full route, you will need between 5 and 7 hours walking at a leisurely pace. Most visitors divide the route into two days.

Where can I park?

There are several free parking lots at the starting points: Tuñón, Entrago, and Proaza. In high season they fill up early; we recommend arriving before 9am.

When is the best time to do the Bear Trail?

The route is practicable all year round, but spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) offer the best temperature and landscape conditions.
