Getting to Senda del Oso from Gijón: Routes, Time & Tips

From the Cantabrian Sea to the great mountain: how to get to the most spectacular greenway in less than an hour.

Gijón is the starting point for thousands of visitors who every year seek the contrast between the Cantabrian Sea and the mining valleys of the interior. Although the Bear Trail is in the heart of the central Asturian mountain, the excellent network of highways allows you to be at the start of the route in just over 45-50 minutes.

In this guide, we explain the best road route and alternatives so that your getaway from the city of cider is perfect.

1. By Car: The Route of the Tunnels

Getting from Gijón is a comfortable and visually impressive journey as you venture into the valleys.

  • Recommended Route: Exit Gijón via the A-66 (Autovía de la Plata) in the direction of Oviedo/León.
  • The Key Link: Before entering Oviedo, take the detour towards the A-63 (Grado/La Espina). Stay on this highway a few kilometers until Exit 9 (Trubia/Puerto de Ventana).
  • Final Section: After the exit, join the AS-228. This is the vertebral road that will lead you directly to the foot of the Bear Trail, passing through Tuñón, Proaza, and Teverga.
  • Estimated Time: 50 minutes (approx. 55 km).

2. Is there direct transport from Gijón?

Currently, there is no direct bus line. If you do not have a private vehicle, the recommended logistics are as follows:

  • Gijón - Oviedo: Take the regular bus (ALSA) or the local train (RENFE) to the Oviedo Bus Station (30 min journey).
  • Oviedo - Bear Trail: At the same Oviedo station, connect with the Pullmans Llaneza (Oviedo-Teverga Line) bus.
  • Recommended Stop: Get off at Entrago if you are going to rent bikes to go down, or in Tuñón if you are going to walk.
