Are you planning an excursion to the Bear Trail with the little ones in the house? You've come to the right place. This greenway is not just a path, it's an educational experience full of adventure that your children will always remember.

Essential information before visiting the Bear Trail with children

Before jumping onto the route, it is fundamental to understand that, although it is a simple journey, we are in a mountain environment. The Bear Trail is "Y" shaped, with about 50 km of main trunk, but the ideal for families is to focus on the points with more visual interest and less physical effort.

  • Difficulty: Very low. It is practically flat in the recommended sections.
  • Safety: There is no motorized traffic, but there are cyclists. Teach children to always walk on the right.
  • Star point: The Bear Enclosure in Proaza is the mandatory stop.

What is the best way to travel the trail as a family?

The smartest option to enjoy to the maximum without the kids getting exhausted is to do the route in downhill direction. Starting in Entrago or Santa Marina and going down to Tuñón allows the bicycle to move almost by itself thanks to the gentle 1.5% slope.

If you prefer walking, it is best to park in the Buyera area (near Proaza) and walk to the enclosure. It is a walk of barely 800 meters ideal for short legs.

Accessibility: Is it possible to go with a baby stroller?

Yes, without any doubt. The path surface is compacted limestone (very pressed small stone) and asphalt sections, making it suitable for most baby strollers.

💡 Expert Tip: Although you can go with any stroller, those with slightly larger wheels ("all-road") are more comfortable for the baby due to small ground irregularities.

Is it a good idea if we are not regular cyclists?

The Bear Trail is the perfect place for people who don't usually ride bikes. Being a recovered railway layout, the curves are wide and slopes are minimal. Moreover, today the rental of e-bikes (electric bikes) has revolutionized the experience, allowing even grandparents to join the family group without breaking a sweat.

The easiest and safest route for children

If you are looking for guaranteed success with children, we recommend the section linking Buyera, Proaza, and the tunnels leading to Peñas Juntas.

  • Start: Buyera recreational area (Easy parking).
  • Milestone 1: The bear enclosure (Paca and Molina).
  • Milestone 2: Pass through the village of Proaza (Ideal for an ice cream or soda).
  • Milestone 3: Cross the first tunnels carved into the rock (They love using their own flashlights).
